Blackjack – also referred to as ‘twenty-one’ and ‘pontoon’ – is a card game that nowadays is generally seen in a casino with people trying their fortune on achieving the elusive ‘twenty one’. It’s widely believed that the game started in France through the 1600’s. However, as with most other casino games the precise development of the game is a mystery.
Twenty-one was brought to the US following the French Revolution, but the game didn’t become favored in the betting houses until the house offered payouts as a bonus. This was the only way that seemed to get players betting on twenty-one. One variant on the reward pay out was for a gambler to make ‘21′ with the black jack card (worth 10 points) and an ace (given a value of eleven points). With the increasing popularity of the game the pay outs were phased out but the name of the game ‘twenty-one’ remained.
Black jack isn’t just about acquiring an outright ‘21′, but the primary challenge is to defeat the dealer without going ‘bust’. The casino certainly has an edge over the gambling players in the long term, but with pontoon the gambler retains a bit of choice.
Since 1931 when the U.S. initial legitimized wagering, chemin de fer has become a traditional gambling den game. Furthermore, it is the combination of both skill and math employed in chemin de fer that has caused the game to be massively loved. Black jack gives an appealing proposition to any academic, math guy or gambling player looking to research the tactic of the game.
